Summerland Wine Tours
Bottleneck Drive BC | Bare Wine Tours
Just off Highway 97 between Kelowna and Penticton lies one of the Okanagan's most charming and distinctive wine regions — Summerland's celebrated Bottleneck Drive. Rolling hills shaped by ancient glaciers, fertile ice-age clay and volcanic soils, and a slightly warmer microclimate than Kelowna combine to produce bold, expressive reds and elegant aromatic whites unlike anything else in the valley. Home to 18 wineries, cideries, distilleries, and breweries connected by a network of scenic backroads, Bottleneck Drive is where small, innovative winemakers do their finest work — and where guests consistently discover their new favourite Okanagan bottle. Our guided Summerland wine tours take the stress out of planning — door-to-door pickup from Kelowna, all tasting fees included, and expert local guides who know every winery on the trail personally.

The Story Behind Summerland's Bottleneck Drive
Summerland is unlike any other town on the Okanagan wine trail — and its distinctiveness starts with geography. Nestled between Peachland to the north and Penticton to the south on the western shore of Okanagan Lake, the region sits within three distinct sub-geographical indications — the Summerland Valleys, Summerland Lakefront, and Summerland Bench — each with its own unique soil composition, topography, and microclimate. Ancient glaciers have left behind more than ten distinct soil types across the area, from wind-blown fine sands over glacial till to gravel and sandy deposits from ancient meltwater streams. Giant's Head Mountain — an extinct volcano — looms over the entire region, its volcanic legacy felt in the soils below. The result is a terrain of remarkable diversity that rewards small-lot, detail-driven winemaking with wines of genuine finesse and complexity.
Summerland's role in shaping the entire Okanagan wine industry runs far deeper than most visitors realise. The Pacific Agri-Food Research Centre — PARC — a 790-acre government research facility that has operated in Summerland for over a century, is widely credited with developing the scientific foundation of BC's modern wine industry. PARC's experimental winery was instrumental in establishing the VQA (Vintner's Quality Alliance) standards that define BC wine today, and the station's varietal research introduced many of the French and German grape varieties now grown across the Okanagan. Today Bottleneck Drive's 18 stops — spanning wineries, cideries, a distillery, and a brewery — carry that legacy of curiosity and innovation forward, offering some of the most personal, unhurried, and genuinely rewarding tasting experiences anywhere in the South Okanagan.
More Than Just Wine in Summerland
While wine is the highlight of most tours, Bottleneck Drive is one of the most diverse craft beverage routes in the Okanagan. If your group wants to mix things up, we're happy to incorporate one of these outstanding non-winery stops into your private tour itinerary:
-
🍎 Dominion Cider Co — A beloved Summerland cidery producing small-batch handcrafted ciders from locally grown Okanagan apples, with a relaxed and welcoming tasting room right on Bottleneck Drive.
-
🍺 Detonate Brewing Co — Summerland's home craft brewery, bringing bold and approachable craft ales to the trail with a casual, community-focused taproom experience.
