The Vibe
Lightning Rock is what happens when passion, skill, and extraordinary land all converge at exactly the right moment. Jordan Kubek and Tyler Knight first discovered the potential of this site as winemakers at Okanagan Crush Pad — and when Jordan's father Ron purchased the Elysia and Canyon View vineyards in Summerland, the couple seized the opportunity to farm their own land and make wine entirely on their own terms. Their first vintage was a bottle without a label and without a name — discovered by an Alberta wine importer on a dock in Penticton, who was so immediately smitten that he tracked the winemakers down the next day. The winery gets its name from a legendary moment — during their first season farming the Elysia Vineyard, they discovered a huge granite rock split cleanly in two, widely believed to have been struck by lightning at some point in the distant past. That piece of geological drama sits at the heart of an estate philosophy that is equally direct: farm honestly, intervene as little as possible, and let the granite speak for itself.
The Experience
Visiting Lightning Rock feels less like a winery visit and more like arriving at the home of someone who happens to make extraordinary wine and genuinely wants to share it with you. Owners Ron and Tracy — Jordan's parents, who run the tasting room day to day — have become beloved by regulars for their warmth, their storytelling, and their willingness to go well beyond a standard tasting experience when time and interest allow. The patio tasting takes place on the lawn overlooking the home Elysia Vineyard, with views stretching south to Penticton and north toward Kelowna — a perspective that puts the full drama of the Okanagan Valley into context in a way that few other wineries can match. The seasonal events calendar is a highlight in its own right — the long-table Italian dinners, charcuterie workshops, yoga in the vines, and live music evenings have each developed devoted followings among both local regulars and visiting guests.
The Wine
Jordan Kubek brings a winemaking philosophy shaped by years at Okanagan Crush Pad and further informed by the specific demands of the granite and limestone soils she farms across three distinct Summerland sites — Elysia Vineyard beneath Giant's Head, the sheltered Canyon View Vineyard in Trout Creek Canyon, and a derelict vineyard the couple has been nursing back to health. All wines are made with organic farming practices, native yeasts, minimal sulphur additions, and a commitment to bottling unfined and unfiltered whenever possible. The result is a portfolio that rewards the adventurous palate — a Chenin Blanc of startling texture and minerality, a Pinot Noir of electric ruby colour and wild strawberry aromatics, a Gamay of pure, crunchy fruit, a concrete-fermented Viognier of rare purity, and a traditional method sparkling Pinot Noir that disgorges without dosage and delivers a complexity that belies its boutique scale. Every bottle is a genuine expression of one of Summerland's most distinctive and least understood terroirs.
